Theodore Shapiro, 84, a horse owner and breeder, died on Dec. 25 at his home in Port Washington after a long illness.
He raced horses in New York with trainer Howie Tesher, according to the Daily Racing Form, among them, seven-time stakes winner Evil’s Pic, who earned $437,877. He and composer Burt Bacharach also bred stakes winner Miss Pickums.
Shapiro attended Drake University where he was an avid football player. Then, he went into the U.S. Navy where he served in Korea as a frogman.
Following that, he attended Brooklyn Law School. He played polo, and was a member of the U.S. Polo Association, New York Jockey Club and owner of Ciao Stables.
He is survived by his wife, Judith (Kreisberg), daughters Kathy Simon (Scott) and Hilary Shepard (Tim Brown), and son, John (Geri), grandchildren Matti, Alix, Cassidy, Scarlett, Jake, C.J., and Adam, and sister Leona Brodner, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on Sunday at the Riverside Nassau North Chapel in Great Neck.
