South Middle seventh-grade students in Diane Caplain and Gail Keyes’ homeroom classes, putting social responsibility into action, raised $400 through donations and bake sales to benefit Philippine victims of the typhoon that devastated millions on Nov. 8, 2013.
The students researched which organizations give the largest percentage of raised money to actual victims, and then decided to give their funds to the American Red Cross. One student related his family’s personal experiences with the typhoon, making the need for aid real and relevant to the students. Several of the students are grouped here holding their donation “check.”
