Northside Elementary School students celebrated the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, with their own weeklong olympics.
Throughout the week, Northside students got to experience the games through creative modified events that emphasized teamwork and physical skills such as running, jumping, muscular endurance and hand-eye coordination.
Students also learned about the history of the Olympic games and how it symbolizes unity and friendly competition amongst different regions of the world. Some of the events that students participated in, include: Bean Bag Curling, Scooter Hockey, Scooter Bobsled, Team Skiing, the Northside Torch Relay, and the Springboard Ski Jump. Younger students even got to create their own medals to take home. The event kept students moving and also created a lot of interest in different types of winter activities. The Winter Olympic Games only come around every four years, and after the winter we have had, it was a great tool to encourage children to embrace the winter season and get out and enjoy the snow.
