The Long Island Science and Engineering Fair was held at the Crest Hollow Country Club on March 13. Six student projects from the Manhasset Science Research Program advanced to the finals and all six received awards and recognition.
Juniors Jessica Kim and Andrew Moshova took first place in Energy and Transportation. Their project looked at the use of quantum dots as a multilayer nanotech solar cell.
Juniors Emma Dong, Grace Lee, and Caitlin McCormick took first place in Environmental Management. Their project investigated the use of marine sediment as a potential fuel source for microbial fuel cells.
Both of these projects will go on to represent Long Island at the International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Los Angeles in May 2014.
Senior Albert Kim took second place in Environmental Science and senior Stephanie Ying was awarded third place in Microbiology. Seniors Rhea Fogla and Priya Alagesan received honorable mention in their respective categories.
Manhasset Science Research students also did exceptionally well at the Junior Varsity Division of LISEF. Five projects received advanced awards in each of their categories.
Sophomores Vedaant Kukadia and Niranjan Senthil Kumar took first place in behavioral science, juniors Brendan Watson and Typher Yom took first place in chemistry, sophomores Kevin Sadhu and Jason Fiacco took first place in biochemistry, and sophomore Christine Yoo took first place in biology. Students Sydney Blanche and Lauren Lynch were awarded second place in JV LISEF in biology.
Manhasset Science Research students from the Saturday Science Honors Program also attended LISEF, competing in the middle school division of the fair. Several of these students received awards in their respective categories. Elin Hu and the team of Fred Chu and Stephen Lee took first place in their categories. These students will be advancing to Broadcom Masters science fair. William Peng and teams of Andrew Juang and Justin Hoey, Philip Chang and John Shelley were awarded third place in their respective categories.
Mr. Guastella, the science research teacher, commented, “As always, we are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication that these students have shown in the preparation and presentation of their work.” Ms. Huenger, science research and chemistry teacher, was equally impressed with the students, stating, “It is extremely rewarding to have our students recognized with such esteemed honors. This recognition serves to validate their hard work and perseverance. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for these young scientists.”
