LuHi Students Help In Nicaragua

luhiService activities are a big part of the educational curriculum at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi) in Brookville and students in grades 6 through 12 have many opportunities throughout the school year to provide help for those in need.

During February break, 32 students, along with several LuHi teachers and staff, departed the LuHi campus en route to Nicaragua.

Once there, they traveled to Managua where they installed sinks in homes that previously had no running water, paved floors and cared for friends in Leon.

“Being in Nicaragua was a truly life changing experience,” said Carol Izzo, a LuHi senior. “The people who live there are extremely thankful for the little they do have. This trip truly opened my eyes to see that there is more to life than what we have. I will never forget that.”

Prior to leaving, the students collected much needed toiletries, medical supplies, clothing and school supplies to distribute to members of the Managua community.

Participants also had time to develop friendships with the local children, engage in activities like soccer, jump rope and drawing, as well as climb Cerro Negro, a volcano in the Cordillera de los Maribios mountain range.
