Following her uncontested election last month, trustee Donna Squicciarino was officially sworn in by Mayor Robert Lofaro for a one year term on Monday, April 7.
Squicciarino is the second woman in New Hyde Park’s 86-year history to serve as trustee. Florence Lisanti was the first woman to serve on the board, whose term expired in 2001.
“I think it’s great,” said Squicciarino. “We needed a woman at the table with a different point of view. We have a lot of different perspectives that guide the village in the right direction.”
Squicciarino was appointed trustee on April 22, 2013 at an emergency meeting of the village board. She filled a seat vacated by Lofaro, who won the mayor’s seat last March after then-mayor Daniel Petruccio decided to not seek re-election.
“I was happy to be re-appointed,” said Squicciarino. “I thank the residents who came out and voted for me. I appreciate the village board and their support and of course to my family.”
A part-time treasurer in the Mineola and Sewanhaka Central High School districts, Squicciarino resigned from her position of accounting consultant in the village to accept the appointed position. She is a CPA and has been a resident of New Hyde Park for 16 years.
“I’m happy that we have the budget behind us,” Squicciarino said. “That was definitely a large task.”
Other village officials were appointed by Lofaro, including Deputy Mayor Lawrence Montreuil, Superintendent of Building Department and Department of Public Works Tom Gannon, Deputy Village Clerk Eileen Raguseo and research assistant to the village board Janet Bevers. These terms expire on March 31, 2015.
