Pictures Worth A Thousand Words

On Thursday, May 8, Dr. Phyllis Goodfriend, a docent for the Nassau County Museum of Art, will present a free visual lecture, “Genesis: To Save Our Planet,” at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library. Here you will be able to view the silent drama of extraordinary photography by Sebastião Salgado during this presentation. Photographer, environmentalist and humanitarian Salgado’s most recent work “would not be to photograph what is destroyed, but what is still pristine, to show what we must hold and protect.” He likes to quote a hopeful statistic: “Forty-five percent of our planet is still what it was at the beginning.” The result of 8 years of work, Genesis is now touring the world as a major exhibit. Salgado has spent many years documenting the horrors of war, famine, and the displacement of indigenous populations and worked with Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF. This public program is funded by Friends of the Garden City Public Library who have served more than 60 years of library support. Garden City residents will be given priority by presenting your Garden City Public Libary card at the program room door. Non-residents will be accommodated on a space available basis 10 minutes before showtime. No saved seats. Limited parking. No tickets are required. The Garden City Public Library is located at 60 7th St. For directions, please call 516-742-8405.
