Man Convicted of Killing Nassau Jail Inmate

A Brooklyn man has been convicted of fatally strangling a 26-year-old Long Beach man who was a fellow Nassau County jail inmate two years ago.

A Nassau County jury found Charles Creekmur guilty Thursday of first-degree manslaughter.

Prosecutors said the 27-year-old man strangled Antwan Brown in the victim’s second-floor cell after a dispute at the jail in East Meadow on Jan. 7, 2012.

Corrections officers arrested Creekmur shortly after the incident. He had been jailed while awaiting trial on robbery and weapons charges stemming from a July 2011 attempted holdup, authorities said.

Creekmur later pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and was sentenced in March 2012 to three years in prison.

He faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 21 by Judge Meryl Berkowitz.
