Floral Park Recreation Notes

The fall months find the Floral Park Recreation Center buzzing with a wide variety of activities for residents of all ages. Both the park and indoor Recreation/Pool Complex will serve as the site of a long line of popular programs as well as several new additions to a comprehensive list of youth, adult and senior programs.

The initial registration for the Fall 2014 Youth, Adult and Senior programs was conducted this past week. Although enrollment for Boot Camp and Silver Senior Sneakers (10:30 a.m.) classes have been closed out, the majority of day, night and weekend classes still have limited openings. A special registration for those still wishing to join one of these programs will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 7 to 8:30 a.m. in the pool building. One of the new classes will be a College Workshop for students entering grades 10, 11 and 12. The 10-week program will focus on students learning to build a resume, learning to prepare for standardized tests, writing a college essay and completing the common application. The instructor is

Paul Meyfohrt, a certified high school counselor who also has 12 years experience in college admissions. The College Workshop will be held on Tuesday nights for an hour starting at 7 p.m.

Another new program is called “Fun and Fitness” for kids, ages 10 and older. This fitness program is set to music and develops strength, coordination skills, balance enhancement, flexibility and yoga poses. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday night, for 6 to 6:50 p.m.

Returning to the Recreation Center after 20 years absent will be the fall adult volleyball program. Twenty six teams have registered for six weeks of friendly competition. A new format

finds teams playing two to three matches per night, with each of the four divisions scheduled on a separate evening.

The men’s division will compete on Monday nights, while the competitive women’s league plays on Tuesdays, intermediate on Wednesdays and Recreation players setting and spiking on Thursday nights. The league begins these weeks and schedules may found on the park bulletin board as well on the village web site: FPVillage.org.

The 35th Annual Jim Krug Fall Tennis Classic was scheduled to come to an exciting conclusion this past weekend, with finals held on Sunday, Sept. 14. There were 13 division and over 40 players competing. Exciting matches were part and parcel of early round play. Excellent skills were on display throughout the early round play with many matches going three sets.
