Legislative Affairs Committee launches
Garden City Public School’s Legislative Affairs Committee convened for the 2014-15 school year with deep discussions about methods and avenues toward the committee’s goals of assessing the impact of existing and proposed state and federal education legislation, promoting legislation that supports the district’s mission, and communicating vital information to Garden City residents.
With so many issues facing public education, the committee plans to focus its efforts in two areas: Advocacy and Education.
Advocacy — Making Garden City’s concerns heard by:
Communicating all vital information to the Board of Education and the community.
Planning meetings with local legislators to discuss specific issues, especially un/underfunded mandates and financial issues.
Organizing with school districts served by local legislators to create a unified message.
Working with the PTA Legislative Committee.
Education — Raising community awareness and involvement by:
Informing the community of issues and addressing misunderstandings.
Creating a special Legislative Affairs Committee section in the district’s On The Line newsletter.
Signing up for Public Schools That Work: www.nspra.org/pstw, a program sponsored by the National School Public Relations Association to promote the “Successory” method of recognizing the good work done by teachers, support staff, parents and others supporting students in the district.
The Legislative Affairs Committee will meet periodically during the school year to discuss action plans and maximize its efficacy toward achieving its goals.
