School spirit was at an all-time high when community members joined students, administrators, faculty and staff for Sewanhaka High School’s annual homecoming parade and game.
The festivities kicked off with a Pep Rally on Sept. 19 on the school’s athletic field and continued on Sept. 20 with a parade that featured colorful banners and beautifully constructed floats based on this year’s “countries” theme.
Sewanhaka High School Principal Debra Lidowsky said the day couldn’t have been more perfect.
“The floats were great and the banners were wonderful and creative. It’s a beautiful day,” Lidowsky said.
When the parade finished, students returned to the high school for the homecoming football game against Long Beach High School. Prior to the game, senior football players were introduced onto the field with members of their families.
During half time, the marching band, color guard and Rockettes performed for those in attendance. Forty administrators and faculty members also participated in an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised $1000 for the ALS organization. Prior to homecoming, the school sold T-shirts and raffle tickets to those students who wished to dump the buckets of water during the challenge, to raise funds.
Awards were given for the best float and banner. First place in the float competition went to the Class of 2015’s United States of America float. The Class of 2018 placed first for its Italy banner.
“What a wonderful day,” Superintendent Dr. Ralph Ferrie said. “We had great attendance, which is always terrific to see.”
The day concluded with success as the Indians defeated Long Beach High School (51–30).
