The students of Herricks High School were treated to a “Blast from the Past” as the Herricks High School Class of 1964 during this year’s Homecoming celebration. Approximately 60 members of the class of 1964 arrived at the high school on homecoming day for a tour of their alma mater. Most of these alumni had not been back to the high school since graduating 50 years ago.
All were impressed with the changes that have taken place and with the friendly demeanor of our high school students. One alumnus became teary eyed when he ventured out into the courtyard.

The group enjoyed the pep rally, where the former Herricks athletes in attendance were called forward to stand with the current athletes. The group received a standing ovation, to which the
“I will remember this day for the rest of my life,” Class of 1964 cross country captain (and organizer of the reunion) Ray Muchmeyer stated.
This was the first homecoming for the class of 1964. Jeff Mandell (basketball and tennis team member) informed said there was no homecoming or pep rally when he attended Herricks from 1961-64. Many of the alumni attended the football game and were thoroughly impressed with the number of people in attendance and the overwhelming positive electricity in the air.
The following evening, the class held their reunion at the Inn at New Hyde Park. More than 130 alumni from Oregon, California and Florida flew in for the special occasion. Muchmeyer did a fabulous job as the emcee of the event. Several alumni spoke of their fond memories of Herricks, including their first District Coordinator of Science, Alfred Schutte. In attendance was Herricks High School’s first New York State Wrestling Champion, Ed Cosgrove. He lettered in football and lacrosse as well as wrestling took the alumni on a tour down Herricks memory lane, detailing experiences he had as a Herricks Highlander.
