Last year Island Trees Memorial Middle School (ITMMS) shared the news that student Audrey Zhang was the national winner of the prestigious Doodle 4 Google contest. Zhang’s artwork was selected as the first place champion from over 150,000 entries. In June of 2014, she was awarded a $30,000 college scholarship and the ITMMS received a $50,000 technology grant.
Over the summer, the Island Trees Memorial Middle School used the $50,000 technology grant to obtain 128 Acer Chromebooks and four charging carts. A Chromebook is a newer and faster computer that starts in seconds and offers thousands of applications. It has built-in virus protection and backs up files in the cloud.
On Thursday, Nov. 13, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to honor Zhang’s victory in the Doodle 4 Google contest and to thank her for providing our students with new technological devices. She was given the honor of cutting a ribbon on a Chromebook cart to officially inaugurate a new age of technology for the ITMMS students and staff. As an added bonus, Zhang and four of her classmates provided a demonstration of the benefits of Chromebooks in an instructional setting.
