Gina Marie DeAngelis received her Girl Scout Silver Award, the second highest award in Girl Scouting.
It represents a girl’s accomplishment within Girl Scouting and her community as she works to improve not only her life, but the lives of all around her.
In order to receive the Silver Award, Gina Marie needed to complete a service project. This project requires the Girl Scout to address an issue in her community which has an impact outside of the Girl Scout community, and is sustainable. It is required that she spend a minimum of 50 hours
on the project.
For her project, Gina Marie decided to try to raise awareness in young women about the possible risks between storing their cell phones in their bra and breast cancer. Although this may sound like a strange place to store your cell phone, after some research she found out that 40 percent of college females place their cell phones in their bra at least some time during the day.
Gina found this quit alarming and wanted to get the word out to girls about the potential risk to their actions. She made pamphlets
and decided to address a local Girl Scout troop and their leaders.
The leaders would then distributed the pamphlets at their regional meeting. Gina is also working with a breast cancer not-for-profit organization to have her findings posted on their website.
As with many residents of Long Island, breast cancer has touched Gina Marie’s family. This has had a profound effect on her.
Gina Marie is currently a seventh grade student at Saint Peter’s of Alcantara School. She is a member of Girl Scout troop 1283 in Williston Park.
