Park District Turf Update

Turf_022015A

parkThe Great Neck Park District will discuss the advisability of installing synthetic turf fields at parks in the park district. On Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m., the park district board of commissioners is set to hold a special work session meeting at Great Neck House, 14 Arrandale Ave., in the Old Village.

In the park district’s recent bond issue approved by the Town of North Hempstead, a Little League/multipurpose turf field had been proposed and approved. However, due to the more recent controversy regarding the possible health issues regarding these turf fields, the park board is interested in getting feedback from the public.

Park District Superintendent Peter Renick told the Great Neck Record that these recent news reports expressing health worries related to different types of such synthetic turf products raised park district awareness.

Artificial turf fields are not used at any Great Neck School District facilities. Superintendent of Schools Thomas Dolan also told the Record that they are hesitant to even broach the subject regarding such fields. As a result, there are no artificial turf fields currently at schools in the district and Dolan said that there are no plans to even discuss the possibility. According to Dolan, health and safety issues for students always comes first.

The park district board of commissioners invites all residents to
attend the Feb. 25 meeting and voice their opinions.
