Feds Probe Robbery Suspect Shot by Lake Success Police

Federal investigators joined the probe into a cell phone store robbery that ended in an alleged carjacker being shot and wounded by a Lake Success village police officer this week, authorities said.

Nassau County police said Friday that the suspect—whose identity authorities have not released—is in federal custody at a local hospital, where he is being treated for two gunshot wounds to the leg and one to the abdomen.

“We are looking to see if there’s any potential for a federal prosecution of the suspect,” Chris Sinos, a spokesman for the FBI’s New York office, told the Press. He declined to elaborate.

The suspect had allegedly robbed the T-Mobile store on Northern Boulevard in Flower Hill before carjacking a victim on Lakeville Road in Lake Success during his getaway when the officer confronted him at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nassau police have said. After shooting the suspect, the officer placed him under arrest, police said.

Nassau police identified the officer as Police Officer Richard Petrillo, a 14-year veteran of the Lake Success Police Department. Police said that he fired three shots—all of which hit the suspect. Lake Success village police referred a request for comment to Nassau police.

Nassau police Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation into the shooting. Major Case Bureau detectives and the FBI are continuing the investigation into the incident that preceded it.
