The numbers are in for 2014. The Port Washington Police District responded to more calls in all categories last year than it did in 2013.
Blotter calls were up from 9026 to 9366, an increase of 340. The “Blotters” include all calls the PD responds to. Medical assistance calls were up from 1589 to 1641, an increase of 52. And, auto accidents were up from 390 to 412.
Deputy Chief Robert DelMuro told the Port News that he could not explain the increase in overall calls, but does attribute the increase in medical aided calls to the increase in senior citizen housing in Port Washington. Medical aided calls are people in need of some type of medical assistance.
DelMuro said: “I know that with the overall increase in calls, officers are working harder to keep up and they are doing an excellent job. In 2013 we fell a bit behind in our manpower. We hired three new officers at the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014”.
The police district hires from the civil service list and so had to wait for a new test to be given in 2014 before it could complete its staffing. DelMuro said the department hired four new officers in February.
“I would just like to say that our police officers and detectives are doing a great job keeping up with the increase in calls despite being short handed,” said DelMuro.
