Scott To Be Honored

The Garden City Chamber of Commerce recently announced that Adelphi University President Dr. Robert A. Scott will be the recipient of the coveted 2015 President’s Award.  Dr. Scott will receive the award at the 13th annual Pineapple Ball on May 8 at the Garden City Hotel. The gala is Garden City’s premier business and social event and celebrates the alliance and vitality of business and community. Initiated in 2011, the President’s Award recognizes above and beyond volunteer spirit and contributions to the Village of Garden City. Scott has demonstrated unprecedented leadership at Adelphi University and has been acknowledged for his outreach to the Garden City community,

Adelphi University is one of the 24 Best Buys in private higher education for the past nine years as selected by the Fiske Guide to Colleges. Under his leadership, Adelphi’s undergraduate enrollment has grown nearly 65 percent and new academic programs have been added, including the Center for Health Innovation. He initiated the Adelphi Community Fellows Program, a competitive paid summer internship program for current undergraduate and graduate students to gain valuable experience in the nonprofit sector and give back to the community.

 Scott has also demonstrated commitment to Garden City schools and other top Long Island districts. In 2001, he established the Adelphi Prize for Leadership, an annual award for juniors from Garden City (in any public or private school) who are recognized for exemplary academic achievement and community service.

 With the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, the university has held joint cultural activities bringing residents to the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center. He has received numerous accolades including the 2008 Chief Executive Leadership Award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District II and his essays earned a Gold International MarCom award. He also hosts the award-winning televised series Exploring Critical Issues, for which he has earned four Telly Awards (the cable equivalent of the Emmy).

Scott is also a former member and chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on International Education, a member of the International Association of University Presidents, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A graduate of Bucknell and Cornell Universities, he is the only person to hold the three top positions in American higher education: head of a public institution, state coordinating board (NJ) and private university.
