Essay Winners

Elizabeth Boyle and Philip Barsky have been named winners to the Irish Cultural Society writing contest. Boyle and Barsky were two of 39 students chosen and both will receive cash awards for their essays The writing project was modeled after an assignment from the New York State English Regents Examination. Entrants were asked to write a rhetorical analysis of a speech delivered in 1943 by President of Ireland Eamon de Valera. Four hundred and eighty-four entries competed for the Society’s 39 prizes.

The Irish Cultural Society will present awards to 39 students from high schools in Nassau County at its meeting on May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Garden City Library; portions of winning entries will be read aloud. President Martin Kelly will acknowledge the H.W. Wilson Foundation for its sponsorship of the contest and he will commend the teachers of the winners for their teaching skills.

The list of all of the names of the winners can be found on the Society’s web site, www.irish-society.org. The top nine winning papers will be on the website by the end of May.

Manhasset Resident Elected To Scholarship Board of Directors

Carina Lewandowski of Manhasset has been elected to the board of directors of the Paul E. Pepe Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, effective immediately.

Lewandowski, a 15-year resident of Manhasset, is a member of the sophomore class at Manhasset High School. She will function as assistant secretary to the board.

The scholarship fund was established in 1984 to honor the memory of a young man killed in an automobile accident. The purpose of the fund is to offer “no strings” scholarships to deserving Long Island students.

College Player Of The Week

Vassar College senior Jackie Palma of Manhasset of the Brewer women’s lacrosse team was named the conference’s Defender of the Week.

Palma earned her second career nod as the Liberty League’s Defensive Performer of the Week after another solid weekend anchoring the Brewer defense. Palma notched four caused turnovers, four ground balls and a draw control to help Vassar to a 1-1 weekend in Liberty League action. She helped keep RPI scoreless in OT while notching her first goal of the year to power VC to an 11-8 victory over the Engineers; the first Liberty League loss for RPI since 2013. Palma currently ranks first in the Liberty League and ninth in the country in caused turnovers per game.
