Memorial Day was observed in Floral Park on Monday, May 25, with a parade and a ceremony at Veteran’s Memorial Park organized by the Floral Park American Legion.
The ceremony began with the Advancement of Colors led by Sergeant-at-Arms Ed LaChapelle. The Prisoner of War-Missing in Action Ceremony (MIA-POW) was led by Legionnaire Brian Keelan and followed by an invocation by Pastor Robert Cerderstrom of the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The national anthem was sung by Kasey Williams, with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Dolores Johnson, president of the Floral Park American Legion Auxiliary. General John A. Logan’s Memorial Day Order was read by Past Commander James MacDonald.
Commander James Whalen recognized the 2015 Grand Marshall, World War II Veteran and 70-year member of the American Legion, Floral Park resident James F. McShane.
After distinguished guests were introduced by Past Auxiliary President and former Floral Park Mayor Ann Corbett the Floral Park Memorial High School Band, directed by Lee Duke, presented a musical selection.
Memorial wreaths were placed under the supervision of Officer of the Day, Past Commander Albert Trasolini assisted by members of Boy Scout Troops 482 and 687. Wreaths were donated by the Floral Park American Legion and Auxiliary, Floral Park Fire Department, Floral Park Woman’s Club and Floral Park AARP Chapter.
Past Commander James Conti read the roll call of departed comrades. Dolores Johnson read the names of the Gold Star Mothers, those who lost a child in the military service and flowers were presented by Scotty Beetle, past vice president of the Legion Auxiliary,
Floral Park Mayor Thomas Tweedy offered ceremonial greetings and Past Commander and Judge Advocate William J. Corbett introduced the guest speaker, Senator Jack Martins, veteran supporter and author of the state’s Homeless Veterans Assistance Fund. Through his efforts, the Floral Park American Legion is installing a defibrillator in its post.
The benediction was presented by U.S. Army Veteran, Rev. Gainus Sikes, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Floral Park.
Colors were retired under the direction of Officer of the Day Albert Trasolini.
The Memorial Day Committee is headed by Past Commander Jim MacDonald, assisted by Past Commanders Albert Trasolini, William J. Corbett and Committee Secretary Rosemary Conti.
