
David Herling of Mineola studied Mandarin Chinese in college. He spent time in China and now teaches Chinese at a school in Flushing. He is married to Vita and is the son of John and Paula Herling. John, by the way, has worked for the Mineola Memorial Library for about 10 years.

Bernadette O’Brien will soon visit her sister, Muriel Smith, in Tennessee. Bernadette is doing well since she had her hip replacement.

Sean Burke of Beebe Road, a construction man, has been working on the re-fabrication of the professional arts theatre. The theatre is right under the Brooklyn Bridge. The building was formally a tobacco warehouse, and has been there longer than the bridge.

Peter Gollobin is a leading manufacturer of medical devices and has patented the Gold Rod Lancet which is used in drawing blood from mice. This instrument is critical to the study of diseases such as AIDS and emphysema, and for studies to bring down high cholesterol. Much of his work is done in India.

Pat and Bob Hinck are remodeling their first floor bathroom. Former Mineola mayor Bob led the 100th anniversary celebration of Mineola. Pat has retired from the Mineola Library. Their daughter, Alexandra, graduated from law school and will soon take the bar exam.

Our police friends in the Third Precinct, Commander Sean McCarthy, Robert Marks, Sean Coffee, and Jim Dougherty and the rest of the officers, continue to do a good job keeping us safe.

“A small fry.” In early Norway, the word fry meant kids. Gradually, use of the word traveled across Northern Europe to Scotland, England and Ireland. Hence, the expression small fry.

“One horse town.” Before the automobile, horses did most of the work. Thus a town that only had one horse was considered pretty insignificant.

Beverly Donnelly still does 30 laps at the John S. DaVanzao Community Pool twice a week.

Jean Baker was born in Mineola 87 years ago and lived her whole life in the village. She was active at one time in the local Lutheran church.

Betty Caterale worked for 11 years in the ER at Winthrop-University Hospital. After that, she went to work at the Nassau County Bar Association and at the old Barrister Restaurant. Betty also worked in the office of the optometrist Dr. Mark Reiss.

The Davenport Press Restaurant has been operating for 32 years. Prior to that, it was actually a printing press. In fact, in several of its corners you can find an old linotype machine. The restaurant is owned by Dennis and his wife Jan and sons. They also have two restaurants in Rhode Island on the waterfront. With the three spots, they do very well.
