Port Washington Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) and the Port Washington Public Library are offering a Creative Readers program starting on Oct. 17. Only a few spots are left in the 2nd through 5th grade group.
Creative Reader’s mission is to offer literary enrichment to increase the joy of reading for kindergarten through 5th graders by turning books into a multisensory experience offering all learners the ability to be challenged, motivated and successful.
Some previous lessons focused on books, art, movement and music activity. Each child will be paired with a teenage volunteer who will participate in all activities with the child. Parents have said, “My daughter loves going to the library to meet her teen buddy.” After the third session a parent said of her reluctant reader, “I am seeing a spark in my daughter that was not there before.”
The program will run for six sessions on Saturday mornings. Second through 5th grade program from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. A few spots are still available; kindergarten through grade 2 is full. Program dates are Oct. 17, Oct. 24, Oct. 31, Nov. 7, Nov. 14 and Nov. 21.
Creative Readers is being funded by Port Washington Special Education PTA and Port Washington Public Library. Port SEPTA’s mission is to empower the community with sensitivity, awareness, and knowledge that will ensure every child the opportunity to reach their highest standard of educational excellence and quality of life.
