This past weekend the Floral Park tennis community celebrated 36 years of multiple levels of play. Winners, runner-ups and participants in all of the sponsored tournaments gathered at the recreation building for a morning of common glory and memory sharing.
Prior to the distribution of awards, players were treated to a breakfast (catered by the Floral Park Dinner) served by staff members Mary Jane O’Malley, Sheila McKendry, Elaine Fitzmaurice and Lauren O’Grady. While enjoying the morning fair, players viewed a slide presentation that highlighted action of tournaments from this year and previous decades. Tournament Director Wendy Bilka, had tables designed with a tennis theme, and in addition each table enjoyed a “Looking Back” brochure that featured highlights and players from the past 36 years.
The awards ceremony began with Emcee John Michon introducing Mayor Tom Tweedy, and trustees Dominick Longobardi, Kevin Fitzgerald and Lynn Pombonyo. Tweedy thanked Superintendent Meyfohrt, Director Bilka and the recreation staff for creating a wonderful playing experience for all levels of play. Tweedy and the trustees then assisted in the distribution of award for the four 2015 tournaments.
The Jim Krug awards featured winners included: Century Doubles—Wendy Bilka/Glen Stephens; Master’s Doubles—Tommy Bilka/Chris Schneider; Master’s Single’s—Chris Schneider; Women’s “B” Singles—Karen Shalvey-Price; Men’s “B” Singles—Marc Hedquist; Women’s “A” Doubles—Wendy Bilka/Linda Falcon; Women’s “B” Doubles—T. Lee Maguire/Linda Youngclaus; Men’s “A” Doubles—Chris Schneider/Scott Zweigbaum; Men’s “B” Doubles—Craig Ripley/Frank Truglio; Mixed “A” Doubles—Terry Donnelly/Matt Vota; Mixed “B” Doubles—Craig Ripley/Amy Chaing; Women’s “A” singles—Terry Donnelly; Men’s “A” singles—Bobby Bressmer.
The annual awards ceremony is always a celebratory culmination of six months of play for tennis enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.
Residents are reminded that the as of Nov. 27 the hours of the recreation center will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Centennial Gardens will be closed for the winter as of Nov. 29.
