Salem Literacy Fest

South Salem Elementary School in Port Washington recently held an evening Literacy Festival that carried the theme “Every Hero Has a Story.” Teachers presented to parents on different literacy strategies, while students in grades K-5 participated in breakout sessions with local heroes, including veterans and firefighters, who spoke about their lives and how reading has helped make them better people and shaped their lives and careers.

John Talbot, a teacher at Salem and a volunteer firefighter in Franklin Square, and Justin Ryan, a teacher at Sousa and a Port Washington volunteer firefighter, shared stories with Salem students.
