As the world wrestles with how to slow down global warming, Residents For a More Beautiful Port Washington put their elementary school Green Team leaders and the Schreiber Tree Hugger Environmental Club on the case. Together, through a grant from The Jaggar Foundation, the “Get Your Green On” signage campaign was developed and unveiled in all five elementary schools last week.
With Green Team leaders donning green “environmental superhero” capes, the campaign features oversized signs with easy suggestions on how students can do their part to protect the planet. In cafeterias, the signs focus on a waste-free lunch. In bathrooms, they focus on water conservation. And, in the main entrance, they provide golden rules for a green school such as recycling, reusing and aiming for less car trips.
“The Get Your Green On project is the foundation for a series of initiatives we are working on with children and adults throughout the community to help slow down climate change,” Residents’ VP of Environmental Education Laurie Courage said. “Our goal is to get everyone to do just one thing to demonstrate that together we can make
a big impact.”
This project is a collaboration of Residents For A More Beautiful Port Washington, the school district and The Angela and Scott Jaggar Foundation. The signs were designed by local artist Michelle Shain and custom wood frames were created by the School District Facility Department under the leadership of Jim Ristano.
