Surrounded by the warmth of his extended family, Plandome Heights resident Edmund Moores recently celebrated his 102nd birthday. The event was hosted by his adult children and was held at the Plandome Heights residence of daughter Phyllis Sternemann, where he lives with her and grandchildren Nicole and Brian. Moore attended Nicole’s college graduation in Pennsylvania.
Moores grew up in Astoria, NY, the son of immigrant parents, where he had a spirited youth and worked in many jobs in family and local businesses. Using skills he learned as a youth in Astoria, Moores went on to become a baker, serving proudly in this time-honored trade for over 45 years. During World War II, he served with distinction in the Pacific theater of operations in the United States Navy as a baker, third class, stationed in Hawaii and where, in his spare time, he made necklaces out of Hawaiian shells that his family proudly wears to this day.
Moores was married to his wife, Rita, for over 60 years, raising two children and four grandchildren in their home in Bayside. He moved into Plandome Heights to be with his daughter, a 20-year resident of the village.
