A group of 75 people recently had the opportunity to take a ride on the way-back machine during a slide lecture given by Assistant Village Historian Suzie Alvey at the Community Club at the Casino. The presentation was titled “Garden City’s Changing Landscape” and guests were treated to historical photos combined with current ones Alvey has taken, some never before seen.
Alvey also set up a display that included recent acquisitions for the village archives and Alvey’s “Antique Map Paintings,” that combine copies of Garden City’s antique maps with oil paintings of the owner’s home.
“As a historian for Garden City, I am always looking for items to include in the village archives,” she said. “When you are doing your cleaning out, please think of items we can use such as old photos, pamphlets, books—anything that might help increase our knowledge of our beautiful village.” (All can be copied if the owner prefers to keep the originals.)
Ruth LaBosco, program chair for the Community Club said, “Suzie is extremely knowledgeable as assistant historian and her photography is amazing. Her friendly and well-spoken manner enhanced the delivery of the presentation, resulting in a program enjoyed by all who attended. It is fascinating that one individual, Alexander T. Stewart founded Garden City and from those beginnings a beautiful community still exists. The changes in the buildings from then to now was very interesting especially the Cathedral of the Incarnation, the St. Paul’s School for Boys, and St. Mary’s School for Girls, as well as many others.”
