A Glorious Graduation

Sunday, June 26, was a beautiful day in Oyster Bay. It was around 80 degrees under bright blue skies. The front lawn of the high school set the scene to celebrate the commencement of the Class of 2016. At the stroke of noon, Matthew Sisia raised his baton and the Oyster Bay High School combined Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble struck the familiar chords of Edward Elgar’s venerable classic, “Pomp and Circumstance.”

The crowd was soon surrounded by a sea of purple and white robes as the graduates marched out the doors of the high school led by the Honorary Marshals from the Class of 2017, Jed Kaiser, Emily Moore and Nicholas Zucconi.

OBGrads_070616AOyster Bay High School senior class president Steven Shoemaker led the hundreds of family, friends and onlookers assembled on the front lawn of the high school in the Pledge of Allegiance. The OBHS Chamber Singers sang a beautiful version of the “Star Spangled Banner” under the direction of Meagan Finnerty.

Oyster Bay High School Principal Dr. Dennis O’Hara said, “The Oyster Bay High School Class of 2016 has achieved in all areas. I want you to know that I have been truly blessed to have been your principal. You have made me feel welcomed, respected and valued. You have shown me understanding, warmth, compassion and kindness. I love you, and because of my association with you, I am among the richest men I know.” He continued, “Graduates, like you, today marks a departure for me too.

As you graduate and prepare for the next stage in your life, I am preparing for new challenges of my own. However, I would like you to think back to the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003…On this day, as you left home, headed to your first day of kindergarten, you probably heard things like, ‘Don’t worry; You’re ready; You will be fine; You can do it; The kids and teachers will like you; It will be fun; You will learn a lot, and you’ll make new friends.’

“I know this because, that’s what my wife said to me as I left home that morning for my first day as a principal in this wonderful community. Your first day of kindergarten in these schools, was my first day too. We started together and we are leaving together. Thirteen years later, we are wiser, our souls have evolved and we are better versions of ourselves. You have been a blessing in my life.

“We may be going our separate ways, but I want you to know my heart will always bleed a little purple and gold and we will have a bond that will last for the rest of our lives.”

O’Hara turned the podium over to Alexis Gursky to deliver the address of welcome as salutatorian of the Class of 2016.

Thank you for your utmost integrity and devotion to the students and to the school.”

“Today is our sunset,” said Yu. “Today marks the end of our time spent in the classrooms, on the fields with the rush of adrenaline knowing that we represent the purple and gold jersey and in the auditorium where the sound of our band and choir can be heard throughout the halls. And as our sun sets, we end not on a sad note, but amongst a sky filled with vivid colors.

“As our precious childhood comes to an end, let us rejoice, as an even better, brighter day is among us. Tomorrow, the sun will rise, and we will have a new dynamic to look forward to. We will venture beyond the horizon, above all limits. We will remember yesterday fondly while celebrating the possibilities of tomorrow.”
