Construction is underway on an ambitious roadway renovation project in the Village of New Hyde Park. According to Mayor Robert Lofaro, work has started on North Sixth Street between Brooklyn and Lowell Avenues and North Third Street. Village officials hope that constructed can be completed by the end of the summer. When completed, numerous roads and avenues in the village will be improved. They include: Terrace Boulevard, Lowell Avenue, Park Avenue, Ingraham Lane, Lincoln Avenue, Brooklyn Avenue, North Second Street, Cherry Lane, North Third Street, Bryant Avenue, North First Street, Plaza Avenue, Hoffman Road, Plaza Avenue, South Fourth Street, First Avenue, South Second Street, South Eleventh Street, Third Avenue, Sixth Avenue, Hillside Boulevard, Washington Avenue, Ingraham Lane and North Sixth Street.
The usual parking and traffic issues were also part of the July meeting of the village’s board of trustees. A resident complained about limited visibility on Park Avenue from Lakeville to Ingraham Land. The mayor replied that no parking signs have been placed on North 10th Street and Park Avenue to allievate any traffic congestion. He added that the such signage may be
constructed on North 11th and North 12th Streets. In addition, the board, Lofaro said, is considering implementing an alternate side of the street parking policy on Park Avenue, which he said will allow for street sweeping and open up the street. Lofaro added that a similar issue exists on First Avenue between South 9th and South 11th Streets, with business parking during
the day reducing the street to a single lane of traffic. As a result, automobiles, he said, can’t get through and the street sweeper has difficulty keeping the streets clean. And so, Lofaro asked that parking concerns on both Park Avenue and on First Avenue between South 9th and South 11th Streets be added to future board agendas.
Another resident commented about property maintenance issues in the village, specifically at center lane medians, at the limousine business on Lewis Avenue and at the trucks parked in that lot. The resident was told that the village building code officer is “continually” monitoring the site. In addition, the board will consider a resolution to hire two part-time Department of Public Works (DPW) workers who will be assigned to turnpike property maintenance.
A car wash application was approved for Saturday Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., an event being held by the New Hyde Park Memorial High School class of 2017. Block party applications have been approved for one of Saturday, Aug. 13 (rain date: Saturday, Aug. 20) at Ingraham Lane between Park and Lowell Avenues, from noon to 11 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 27 (rain date: Sunday, Aug. 28) at South 13th St. between 6th and Stewart Avenues, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 10 (rain date: Sunday, Sept. 11) on Millers Lane between Station Road and Jericho Turnpike from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In other news, it has been another successful summer for the children’s summer recreation program. Village officials said that there are 80 to 90 children participating this year, with 75 percent of participants as village residents.
The first summer concert was held last month and attracted one of the largest crowds in the past few years. Maspeth Bank sponsored this show and their generosity is appreciated. The July 14 show, a theatrical production of All Shook Up was moved to the William Gill Theatre due to the weather. Approximately 75 people attended.
Upcoming shows include a children’s theatre production of Snow White on Saturday, Aug. 13 and Sunday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. The show is directed by Marilyn McClean. Information is available on the village website. Tickets are limited and village officials advice advance ticket purchase.
