Boy was it hot on Saturday, July 23, when 63 men, women and children braved the relentless heat to participate in the 12th annual Port Washington-Manhasset Bay Kayak Run, copresented by the Community Chest of Port Washington and the Town of North Hempstead. The kayak run is generously sponsored by the Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation, with major assistance from Atlantic Outfitters and the North Shore Kayak Club.

The kayak run has become a favorite for summer kayakers. Because of the proximity of the Bay Constable patrol boats, participants feel safe kayaking longer distances than they usually would, which allows them to appreciate the natural beauty of Manhasset Bay. In addition to the town’s Bay Constables, numerous community volunteers helped to make this event run smoothly.
Andrea Lim of Port Washington was the grand prize winner of a new kayak. Atlantic Outfitters’ owner John Thomson III generously donated raffle items, which included a BIC Kayak paddle, NRS Tuff Sac and a Princeton-Tec Eco Flare. Eighteen kayakers went home with raffle prizes.
The proceeds from the Port Washington-Manhasset Bay Kayak Run benefit the Community Chest’s 26 local nonprofit organizations. For information regarding Community Chest events, call 516-767-2121.
