Silverstein Hebrew Academy (SHA) kicked off the 2016–17 school year with administrators, teachers and staff greeting eager students as the new term began.

Among the many points of excitement for the new year are initiatives aimed at making the learning experience relevant in the 21st century, rigorous academic coursework and increased enrollment.

Classes have reached maximum capacity for the first time in SHA’s history, creating a waiting list for children in pre-K through fourth grade. Administration believes that the increased enrollment is a reflection of SHA’s competitive New York State test scores and robust academic Judaic and general-education programs. Last year, 75 percent of SHA seventh graders scored a 3 or higher on the NYS ELA exam and 70 percent of the academy’s fourth graders scored a 3 or higher on the NYS math exam—nearly double the state average.

One of the programs SHA is most excited about is a coding course, which will teach students the skills to create computer software, apps and websites. SHA will also utilize the online learning platform ScootPad as an extra resource for kindergartners through eighth graders preparing for Common Core math and ELA exams.

To develop a broader line of communication between parents and teachers, parents will be able to join in on the school’s website using ParentLocker, a new web-based platform.
