The concert series at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour began on Sunday, Sept. 18, with a Latin beat. Carlos Castillo and his orchestra Sonido Clasico presented a lively program of Latin jazz music from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. Dancing in the aisles was encouraged.
Sonido Clasico is a Latin jazz group of professional musicians. The group started at Nassau Community College where director Castillo, a native of Puerto Rico, is an adjunct professor. Castillo played bass, trumpet and drums and made recordings with the Latin jazz dance bands of Tito Puente, Joe Cuba, Machito and Dizzy Guillespie. Sonido Clasico aims to preserve the music of this era which is the forerunner of today’s salsa. The program also included selections from Peru and Panama. When Castillo asked if they could play beyond the scheduled time, he was greeted with enthusiastic applause from the audience.
