They might not have been able to vote for president for real, but students in Christine Ross’ first-grade class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District still were active participants in the election. The children spent time learning about the election process and the candidates.
For an election activity, each student made a poster, “If I Were President,” and wrote a paragraph about what they would do if elected to the nation’s highest office. Ideas included helping the homeless, building schools in other countries, and giving everyone more time to sleep.
The students also participated in the district’s mock election. Ms. Ross boxed off a computer in the room to make students feel like they were stepping into a voting booth as they cast their online ballots. As a school, Fairfield picked the winning candidate, with 62 percent of students voting for Donald Trump.
