The Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults (HKNC) a Kick off Breakfast on Jan. 27 at the center’s headquarters in Sands Point. The breakfast showed a video of a former HKNC student who has done several Ironman competitions. Marina Carroll, development office for the HKNC, spoke about what is going on at the center and the upcoming April 23 run/walk. An interpreter stood by and signed the entire presentation.

Special guest speaker Sara Siskind, founder of Hands on Healthy and a certified nutritional health counselor, spoke next and shared tips on making healthy lifestyle choices to make you feel your best every day.

The annual Helen’s Run/Walk 2017 which takes place on April 23 has been a regular fundraiser for the center since 1994, when it was a walk only and had about 100 participants. In 2013, a run component was added to attract those who enjoyed a good 3.1 mile run on a Sunday morning and has grown considerably. Last year was the best attended event ever.

The 5K/3.1 mile course will be officially timed by Start To Finish. The route begins in the Sands Point Preserve at 9:30 a.m. sharp (registration is from 7:45 to 9 a.m.) The finish line is on the HKNC campus where there will be refreshments, an awards ceremony and an opportunity to see many of the latest adaptive technology devices and other training tools that help to level the playing field for people who are deaf-blind.
