Tropical Storm Jose may bring strong winds and rain that may cause flooding and blackouts on Long Island this week even though it is forecast to spare the region a direct hit, officials said.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tropical storm watch Sunday for Nassau and Suffolk counties, meaning such weather conditions are possible in the next 48 hours. That includes the possibility of up to 35 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 45 mph.
“Efforts should now be underway to secure all properties,” Upton-based NWS forecasters said in a statement. “Hazardous wind is possible.”
The storm is also expected to impact much of the coastal areas of the tri-state region as it passes southeast of LI.
Forecasters warn that the winds may down trees and power lines, causing power outages, and damage property if unsecured objects are not stowed away. Some roads may also be impassible and driving may be hazardous on bridges and elevated roadways.
Up to three inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, is expected. Streams and catch basins may overflow as a result. There is a limited possibility that localized rainfall in higher amounts may cause a few evacuations, NWS said.
