Floral Park Memorial High School recently held its annual holiday food drive for Island Harvest. The collection was sponsored by the student council, under the direction of adviser Carolyn Faggioni and in conjunction with the social studies department.
Social studies teachers and others encouraged students to participate by donating nonperishable food items and/or volunteering their time. Nearly 3,000 pounds of food was donated, while dozens of students volunteered to help move the food from the individual classrooms to the pick-up location and onto the Island Harvest truck.
The last day of the drive coincided with the school’s Ugly Sweater Day. Hundreds of students, faculty and staff wore their favorite “ugly sweaters” to school and many made monetary contributions to the Island Harvest fund during third period.
The third-period class which raised the most cash was Mr. Simone’s, and the individual class that raised the most food was Mrs. Dierlam’s.
