Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, the first female county executive of Long Island, was honored as a “ceiling breaker” at Cedarmore Corporation’s recent Lifting as We Climb fundraiser, that highlights career women who are “paying it forward” to educate, empower and inspire the next generation of female leaders. The benefit, organized by Cynthia Perkins-Roberts and held at the North Ritz Club, raised funds to benefit the expansion of Cedarmore’s Girlz Talk program, established six years ago to educate, empower and motivate girls from underserved communities across Long Island.
Each spring, more than 375 girls gather at Hofstra University for a day of keynotes, interactive sessions and candid conversations that focus on academic and social issues as well as overcoming obstacles they face as they transition into womanhood. The “Lifting As We Climb” Benefit is designed to help support the initiative’s expansion to include monthly/semi-monthly sessions that focus on college preparedness and personal development, led by subject matter experts.
The goal of “Girlz Talk” is to showcase the successes of young girls and to help them recognize that they can realize their potential.
