The Port Washington Board of Education held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 21 after its regular board meeting to celebrate the brand new concessions facility near the Schreiber High School track. The Port Board of Education along, with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Mooney and two former board members Alan Baer and Christina Nadlone, cut the blue ribbon on the new concession building which features single men and women’s public restrooms along with a concessions area.
The concessions building comes a few years in the making from a State and Municipal Facilities Program (SAM) grant of $125,000 given to the school district by previous Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel. The SAM grant, Mooney explained, must be allocated to capital improvement projects. Because the grant is reimbursable, the district had to expend the cost for the building to be created before they received the grant monies.
Mooney said that the grant was chosen to be used for the concessions building based on feedback from the community.
A unique construction process was used for the concession/restroom facility. The building was prefabricated in Nevada and then transported to the district. Site work in preparation for the building was done prior to its arrival from Nevada. Placement of the building and final utility hookups were completed this summer, ensuring full operation for the 2018-19 school year.
“Outdoor activities at our high school campus—sporting events, band concerts, charitable drives—bring our community together,” said Mooney. “This new facility will make those experiences more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.”
The concessions part of the building will be open for athletic booster clubs to sell water among other things during games.
