The Long Island Rail Raid (LIRR) third track project is in full effect now in the Village of Floral Park. South Tyson Avenue, which is a main thoroughfare in and out of the village, closed on Monday, July 8, and will last until Friday, Aug. 16, from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day. Both the road and sidewalk will both be closed during those times and will reopen for vehicular traffic each night just in time for the rush hour commute.
The work that will take place under the South Tyson bridge will also result in the additional loss of four to six spots under the Floral Park LIRR station. However, to offset the loss of those parking spaces, 3TC will provide an additional four to six spots for commuter parking at the Storage Post lot on Lily Avenue in addition to the 30 commuter spots that are currently available there. Village of Floral Park LIRR parking permits will also be honored at the commuter lot.
On Saturday, Aug. 17, and Sunday Aug. 18, South Tyson Avenue will be completely closed for 24 hours for the installation of the new bridge that will be rolled into place with 3TC planning to reopen South Tyson on Monday morning, Aug. 19.
In addition to the new South Tyson Bridge, sound walls have been delivered to a staging area east of the Floral Park Station and are currently being installed. The retaining walls enable the LIRR to build within the right of way while the sound attenuation walls will serve as a barrier for train noise.
