A man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman who asked him to put on a mask while they rode together on a Suffolk County Transit bus near downtown Riverhead, Southampton Town Police said.

Ernest Ryshaun Clay, 43, of Riverhead, was charged with third-degree assault.

Police said he punched a 46-year-old woman in the head after she asked him to put on a mask, an argument ensued, and the two got off the bus at the Peconic Avenue traffic circle shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has required people to wear masks in public places to avoid the spread of coronavirus.

Flanders Volunteer Ambulance medics treated the victim for the laceration at the scene.
