How Nassau County Is Helping Animals Affected By Maui Fires — And Animals Available For Adoption On Long Island

The best way to save an animal is always by adoption, but in times of crisis such as the recent wildfire in Hawaii’s Lahaina, rescue organizations need funding to help animals who have been displaced and/or injured. The Nassau County SPCA recommends donating directly to the Maui Humane Society to help with critical care for animals in need, and/or purchasing items on their Amazon Wishlist to help with the influx of animals due to this recent devastation.

Available for adoption at the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter

Adoption Tator

**Special Request** Tater is a five-year-old Domestic Shorthair who was found as part of the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program in 2018. Tater was initially adopted as a kitten, but he was sadly returned to the Animal Shelter through no fault of his own. This poor boy unfortunately was born blind, which means he is sometimes fearful of new environments, but a calm and quiet home will make him feel at ease. He is affectionate, gentle, and sweet, and would be a wonderful companion for any cat lover. Tater has been through a lot in his life, and it’s time for him to find his purrfect home.

To adopt this sweetheart, please call the Smithtown Animal Shelter at 631-360-7575.

Available for adoption through Lend-a-Paw Inc.

Adoption Georgie

Georgie is a lovable ball of affection who was rescued from a local hoarding situation, and after a compassionate intervention, he’s ready to find his forever home. Georgie’s journey has captured the hearts of volunteers, and his endearing personality has also won him numerous feline friends. At 4-years-old, Georgie is seeking a loving and stable forever family to call his own. Georgie is eagerly waiting to bring his charm and companionship to his new family’s life.

Adoption Aruba

Introducing Aruba, affectionately known as Kiko! Aruba’s foster parents can’t say enough good things about him—he’s truly a fantastic blend of energetic and laid-back. This wonderful one-year-old boy delights in his bouncy ball and chicken stuffed toys, and he’s made remarkable progress in conquering his fears of loud noises (fireworks don’t faze him). His separation anxiety has improved, and he would thrive best in a home with someone who works from home, offering him the companionship he craves.. Aruba’s love for dogs is boundless—he enjoys the company of dogs of all sizes, playing gently and exuberantly with them. While he’s made great strides, he’s still in need of assistance in managing his excitement around cats. Aruba’s endearing quirks include his penchant for sleeping in unconventional spots, like his fosters’ closet instead of his dog bed. He’s your loyal shadow, following you from room to room just to be nearby. His love for human friends is evident, though he’s working on refining his manners and controlling his jumping when greeting people.

Adoption Thor

Thor is a true bundle of love and joy, guaranteed to fill any home with warmth and laughter. His affectionate nature shines through as he adores couch and bed cuddles. Thor’s favorite sleeping position, on his back with limbs sprawled, speaks to his comfort and relaxation. His preferred toys are the big and fluffy kind, or something he can sit and chew on, showcasing his playfulness. Thor’s current foster sister is helping him learn about personal space and respect. While he’s working on his separation anxiety, his progress is commendable—each day brings improvement. He’s averse to closed doors, a sentiment many of us share! House trained and well-behaved, he has access to a yard and doesn’t have in-house accidents. Thor is neutered and doesn’t require crating, showing excellent behavior even when left alone.  This handsome pup revels in long walks, embracing the occasional shade break when he needs to recharge. He’s particularly fond of his anti-pull harness during walks and garners compliments for his stunning appearance. Thor’s enthusiasm for life is evident as he stares at squirrels and birds, showing his desire to chase them. He’s a friendly greeter, extending hellos to both people and new dogs alike. Thor takes car rides and urban environments in stride, showcasing his adaptable nature. This wonderful boy deserves a home with active owners who can match his energy and zest for life.

Adoption Auggie

Auggie’s life took a positive turn when he was rescued from a city shelter, having narrowly escaped the euthanasia list. This two-year-old sweet boy, although taking some time to warm up, eventually became a favorite among staff. His curiosity knows no bounds, and he’s always eager to explore his surroundings. Auggie is a true lap-loving companion, more than willing to settle in for some cozy petting time. And yes, he’s extra special with two extra toes on each paw, making him truly unique!

Adoption Montauk

**Senior Alert** Eight-year-old Montauk (Adoption #BF2531) is a local rescue who needed a quiet spot to settle in and reset. North Shore Animal League America provided that, and now he’s opening up to volunteers and staff a little more every day. If you have a confident cat who can show him the ropes in his first home, Montauk will prove to be the most loyal friend you could ask for. A home with adults only will provide him with the optimum retirement.

Adoption Bastet

**Double Adoption** Although 11-month-olds Bastet (Adoption #H212116) and Heru (Adoption #H212117) are now safely cuddling together in a beautiful room in Bianca’s Furry Friends, they didn’t always feel so secure around us humans. This adorable set of tabbies needed help conquering their fears of the humans who have cared for them since they were rescued locally. They’ve developed into super players with friends and toys, only paws-ing long enough to collect their fair share of treats and ear rubs. If you’ve had cats before, you’ll recognize how time and patience can help you all successfully blend into a loving relationship. A consistent home, with older children who can make them feel safe, is all that’s required to make Bastet and Heru feel welcome and secure.

Adoption Tilly

**Double Adoption** Shy one-year-old sisters Tilly (Adoption #H212144) and Tammy (Adoption #H212145) were offered the opportunity of a lifetime when their local rescuer delivered them to North Shore Animal League America. While the sudden changes to their lives left them slightly skeptical, these beauties have learned that with a little time and patience, humans are great friends to them. A quiet home with older children who can offer them the consistent love they deserve will do best for them.

Adoption Ryder

Ryder (Adoption #H212184) is a two-year-old little wonder who got to care for her kittens in the safety of a nursery after living outside for most of her life. She had the help of kind strangers to get her into caring hands and is so much happier for it. Want to give Ryder the ride of a lifetime? Drive her home today from Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center.

Adoption Esti

Are you a tortie lover looking for a tortie to love? You’re in luck because two-year-old Esti   (Adoption #L80615) is the model of tortie purrfection! This stunner likes to take in her surroundings before diving in for her fair share of treats. She’s the champion of feather hunting and knows how to make available laps for her staycation. A cat-experienced home with older children who can follow her lead is exactly the home she’d thrive in.

Adoption Fauna

When one-year-old Fauna (Adoption #NCI3596) came in, she was put in the caring hands of veterinarians to help her recover from an uncomfortable eye situation and a heart condition. While she doesn’t require medication, she’ll receive follow up care for her condition at cost through our Pet Health Centers, a wonderful way to make loving her easy with a team to support her.  She’s shown everyone she’s a loving survivor from a difficult past, and we’re looking for a peaceful, experienced home with older children ready to provide her with a fresh start.

Adoption Trica

Tender Trica (Adoption #PR00349) is a six-month-old calico looking for an adoring human to complete her rescue journey. Originating from Puerto Rico, this lucky young lady has been enjoying admiring her more boisterous roommates from the comfort of her cubby but doesn’t mind a visit with gentle humans. Trica’s dreaming of nap time in a purrmanent cozy bed. You have the power to make that dream come true by bringing her home!

If you’re ready to open your heart and home to any of these fabulous felines, contact DoritS@animalleague.org or visit their Port Washington campus today!
