The program “Bearing in Mind: Poems and Vignettes of an Afrolatina in Long Island,” by Adriana Devers, took place this past Friday at the Westbury Memorial Public Library. The program was selected by NYSCA as a fiscal sponsorship recipient under Huntington Arts Council. This program marked the 4th presentation of the year by Devers and second appearance at the Westbury Memorial Public Library, where the audience was deeply touched and enthusiastic by the multidisciplinary showcase that unfolded before them.
Devers weaved together poetry and vignettes that resonated with the hearts of attendees in an enriching bilingual program full of rhythm and cultural pride. The special guest, musician Juan Uribe, added a layer of cultural richness by drumming to the poems and imparting knowledge about the instruments of our African ancestry. His presence elevated the experience and brought a deeper understanding of the roots of the artistry showcased. The real magic of the evening was in the hands of the children. Jazline Rodriguez, with her heartfelt introduction, set the tone for the program. Benjamin Uribe’s drumming alongside his father Juan exemplified a beautiful blend of tradition and family values. And Jeremiah Rodriguez, with his medley of musical hits on the piano, brought the night to a close, leaving the audience in awe of the young talent displayed.
The essence of the program lay in its ability to connect the audience with their own childhood experiences, tapping into cultural identity, heritage, and shared experiences that transcend individual differences. Through poetry and storytelling, Devers touched on themes of cultural values and unity, underscoring the notion that we have more in common than we often realize. In a poignant moment, Devers urged parents in the audience to have meaningful conversations with their children about crucial topics such as race, family diversity, and mental health. By shining a light on these often-overlooked subjects, she sparked a dialogue that is essential for fostering understanding and empathy in our society. This program was a beautiful showcase of artistic talent and a catalyst for profound reflection and connection.
