The rain barrel and composter sale is returning to North Hempstead for town residents throughout September.

This year the town is again partnering with BrandBuilders, a company that has worked with other Long Island towns to provide residents with access to affordable sustainability options.

Residents must place their order for a rain barrel and/or composter online at www.northhempstead.compostersale.com by the end of the day on Sept. 23. Pickup will be held on the following dates at Clark Botanic Garden, located at 193 IU Willets Road in Albertson:

  • Friday, Sept. 26, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, Sept. 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Incorporating a rain barrel and composter into your home can reduce water costs, keep the town’s waterways clean, improve soil health for plants and wildlife, and provide a natural water source for plants and gardens. These practices help to reduce the pollution that enters storm drains, enhancing the health of our environment and your wallet.

“Composter and rain barrel sales have been popular among our residents for years, and if you missed our spring sale, now is a great time to start,” Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena said. “A sustainable town is a successful town, so this is our special offer to encourage residents to join in. It’s good for your garden, and it saves you money, too, so why not place an order?”

A composter is a bin that allows decomposers to break down yard and kitchen waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment, which provides a variety of benefits. These include: reducing waste in landfills and combustion facilities, adding valuable plant nutrients, improving soil structure, suppressing plant diseases, lessening the need for fertilizers and pesticides, and preventing soil erosion and nutrient runoff.

Rain barrels are large containers that collect rainwater from roofs. This water is then used to irrigate lawns and gardens. One of their main benefits is conserving water that comes from Long Island’s underground aquifers, which provide 100% of Long Island’s potable water. Rain barrels also allow users to save money and reduce stormwater pollution.

“I’m glad town residents have simpler, cost-efficient opportunities to help the environment,” Town Council Member Edward Scott said. “As someone who takes pride in his garden, I’m always looking for new ways to keep it healthy, and I know others do, too. These barrels and composters are just the kind of tools we need.”
