The Oyster Bay Civic Association meeting on Thursday, May 21 brought up a great deal of things going on in the community. Not the least of those are the many fundraising events coming up.
The first is the Joint Civic Association party at the Pine Hollow Country Club on Friday, May 29 from 7:30 to 11 pm. Rob Brusca who is chairing the event said it will be held inside or outside according to the weather. He said this year, because of the economy they didn’t go to the local merchants for raffle items, but there will be raffles. The top raffle item is a three hour tour aboard Charles Doering’s Tierana – 31, the Alcazar (a royal residence), a 35 ft. ship that will sail four guests to Lloyd Neck, Centre Island, past Seawanhaka, West Harbor and Mill Neck too. He sails out of the OB Marina with a crew of three, including himself. There will be other raffle items too. This is more of a “come out and meet and greet your fellow residents/members” than a fundraiser – although the raffles will provide a little perk for the groups. They each give a scholarship to students interested in civic affairs, passing the baton on to a younger generation. Tickets are $50 for one or $95 for two.
Join Doubleday Babcock Senior Center on Sunday, May 31 at the Annual Hat Day at the Races at beautiful Belmont State Park in the Garden Terrace as you enjoy a lovely lunch and watch the horse races at this annual fundraiser. Wear your favorite hat to compete in their “hat contest.” Tickets are $90 and call 922-1770 for more information. The event funds senior activities.
On Monday, June 1, the Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce is holding their Summer Splendor 2009 fundraiser at Fiddleheads at 6 p.m. It is to continue their beautification of the hamlet. And, they would like sponsors for new bike racks. Tickets to the cocktail party are $65 per person or $100 per couple.
The Oyster Bay Historical Society is holding a WWII Style Canteen Dance and Fran Leone is working hard to promote it. It will be held on Saturday, June 6 – D-Day, at the East Woods School. Tickets are $150 and will help build their new research center building. They have a $300,000 matching grant to meet. It is a great way to increase the bang of your bucks while dancing you socks off.
On Friday, June 12, your presence is requested for a Summer Cruise at the Boys & Girls Club. It’s a secret but Greg Van Dyke is creating a gangplank to enter “The Good Ship Bahnik Youth Center”. Tickets are $225 per person. It is always a great event with local celebrities dancing the night away – as well as getting in on some great raffles. It is all to benefit the children of the community, some of whose parents are feeling the recent economic crunch – causing a need for more funding for kids programs.
Don’t forget the Summer Solstice Celebration at the Sagamore Yacht Club, on June 18, from 6 to 10 p.m., and a champagne toast at sunset. It’s a fundraiser to benefit the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, the tickets start at $50. For more info visit www.obrm.org. This little museum that can is chugging along making its dreams come true.

Last Minute News
The Bayville Fire House is having a blood drive on Thursday, May 28 at the firehouse at 258 Bayville Avenue, from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Long Island hospitals need over 800 blood donations each week to meet the needs of cancer patients, accident victims and people facing surgery and other medical problems.
Blood donors must be at least age 16-76 (16 with written parental permission; 76+ with a physician’s note), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in general good health. All donors receive free mini-medical exams on site and information about their temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure and hemoglobin level.
