Bobcats 18U Girls Fastpitch Softball Win LAC Island Splash IV

The LAC Bobcats girls fastpitch softball team, managed by Bobby Tedeschi and coached by Angela DiTieri and Rich Pollina, concluded the 2009 season by winning their fourth championship of the summer. The Bobcats defeated the South New Jersey Stingrays 10-0, in the finals of the LAC Island Splash IV, which was held at Carmen Avenue field in East Meadow. The Bobcats finished the season with a 32-11-2 record.

The first game was a 1-0 win over the NY Lady Cobras. Pitcher Kristen Torres scattered five hits and also scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning. Catcher Rachel Barry called a great game. In the second game, the Bobcats defeated the Rich Haven Lady Ravens 8-0. Pitcher Nicole Mulvihill threw a one-hitter, with seven strikeouts. The Bobcats scored five runs in the first inning. Outfielders Tara Lanigan and Ashley Goldstein had two hits apiece, and third baseman Nicki Petrucci and first baseman Renee Greenspan made several nice defensive plays. The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the South New Jersey Stingrays in the first inning on singles by pitcher Lanigan and Petrucci. The Bobcats added another run in the second to make it 3-0. The Bobcats wound up losing 5-3 and went into Sunday as the second seed.

On Sunday the Bobcats played the NY Lady Cobras in the semifinals as pitcher Nicole Mulvihill again threw a one-hitter, leaving the game scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when catcher Barry and left fielder Deana Tortorici (three hits) singled with one out and scored on first baseman Lindsay Brown’s single. Greenspan then singled in Brown to increase the lead to the eventual final score of 3-0. That win put the Bobcats in the finals. Again the Bobcats jumped out in front with three runs in the first inning. Tournament MVP Nicki Petrucci had three hits, scored three runs, second baseman Rochelle Troise made several nice plays, and pitcher Torres struck out six, scattering five hits. Shannon Angher had an RBI single in the sixth to increase the lead to 7-0 and the Bobcats took the title with a 10-0 win.

Tryout Information

The Bobcats will be having tryouts to try and again reload the roster with talent for the 2010 season. The tryouts are Saturday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. at Division Ave. High School softball field, Sunday, Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. at Azalea Park, and Saturday, Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. at Division Avenue High School softball field.
