Anonymous Drug Disposal Program
Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey and Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman announce an Anonymous Drug Disposal Program. Accepted medications include pain killers, tranquilizers, anti-depressants, antibiotics, over-the-counter medications, pet medications, vitamins, supplements, inhalers and more. Drugs should be in their original containers if possible, and if not placed in zip loc bags that are labeled. All drop offs will remain anonymous. Items/drugs that will not be accepted include: sharps (e.g. needles and syringes), IV bags, infectious waste, pharmaceutical waste not generated by households (e.g., clinics, pharmacies, hospitals, doctors, etc.), radioactive pharmaceuticals and vaccines. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at NCPD Third Precinct, 214 Hillside Ave., Williston Park and Senator Michael J. Painters and Poets Portray Rare Hempstead Plains Flower
The only federally endangered species of flower in New York State, the Sand-plain Gerardia, will be the subject for artist’s and poet’s skills at two workshops being conducted on the Nassau Community College’s 19 acres of prairie habitat, the Hempstead Plains, in Garden City, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshops are sponsored by the Friends of Hempstead Plains at NCC. The flower painting workshop is being conducted by artist Harriet Carotenuto of Garden City. Maxwell C. Wheat, Jr., of Freeport, Nassau County’s first Poet Laureate, is guiding the poetry writing. Prof. Elizabeth “Betsy” Gulotta, Conservation Project Manager, will lead a walk looking at the dozens of other species of flowers as well as the tall grasses that grow on the western prairies.

Antique Motorcycle Show
Will be held at the Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Pky., Floral Park, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorcycles will be displayed in the apple orchard. If you want to enter your bike in the show, arrive for registration between 10 and 11 a.m. The show will include various makes and models of motorcycles that have been out of production for 10 years or more. Show participants are invited to compete in the Slow Race and a People’s Choice Trophy will be awarded. Music, farmhouse tours, hayrides, petting zoo and food will provide fun for the entire family. Floral Park Historical Society
The Floral Park Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Hall to hear a talk entitled “My Recollections” by former Floral Park resident Bill Halleran. Halleran will talk about his early years in Floral Park and his experience in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack at the start of World War II. The Floral Park-Bellerose PTA invites all committee chairs and parents to attend the first meeting of the school year at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium. The PTA will present the 2009-2010 budget and a vote will be taken. St. Anne’s Spirit Day
The area at New Hyde Park Rd. and Dartmouth St. will be transformed into the annual playground known as Spirit Day. Rides, attractions, vendor’s music and food all add up to a memorable day. At 5 p.m., an outdoor Mass will be offered. The evening will culminates with the drawing of the Big Bucks Raffle winners. Plan on spending some time at Spirit Day, where fun food and laugher will all be in store.

The Floral Park Youth Council will hold its first directors meeting Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the United Methodist Church of Floral Park. Pre-K Eye Screening
The Floral Park-Bellerose School and John Lewis Childs School PTAs will hold a pre-K vision screening program Thursday, Sept. 24. The screening, which checks for amblyoia or “lazy eye,” is provided in conjunction with the Helen Keller Services for the Blind. FP-Bellerose pre-K students will be screened at Floral Park-Bellerose School. Children with last names starting with “A” through “M” will be screened from 9-10 a.m. Children with names starting with “N” through “Z” will be screened from 10-11 a.m. John Lewis Childs pre-K students will be screened at John Lewis Childs School. United Methodist Church of Floral Park will hold its annual steak and lobster dinner and Chinese auction Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. in the church auditorium, 35 Verbena Avenue.
