Registration for Swim Lessons at Adelphi Begins

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting children’s swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University Swimming Pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings.

Children must be 6 years of age by the start of the program to participate. The classes will begin Saturday, Jan. 9. Classes are taught by Red Cross Certified Instructors. The cost is $50. To register, please mail this form and a check to the Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Ave. Walk-in registrations will not be accepted until Jan. 6.

Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills.

Level 2 – For children who have taken a lesson but need to learn fundamental skills.

Level 3 – Will build on fundamental skills by providing guided practices.

Level 4 – Develops confidence in the strokes learned and improve other

aquatic skills.

Level 5 – Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes

Level 6P Personal Water Safety – For children who have passed “Red Cross” level 6 or 7. Stresses survival floating, treading water, swimming in clothes, etc.

Level 6F Water Fitness – For children who have passed “Red Cross” level 6 or 7. Sessions will cover learning training techniques, how to use fins, kickboards, pace, clock, etc.

Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable. Registration can only be done by mail at this time and walk-in registrations will be accepted starting on Jan. 6. The Recreation Department cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail. To register, pick up an application at the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade, and the session and classes for which you are registering. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Avenue. Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.”

Holiday Gym Program

During the Holiday Recess, the Garden City Recreation Department will offer a gym program for children in the St. Paul’s Fieldhouse on Dec. 28, 29, 30. This program is open to youngsters of the Incorporated Village of Garden City only.

The schedule for these programs will be as follows:

Kindergarten and 1st grade – 9 to 10:30 a.m.

2nd and 3rd grades – 10:30 a.m. to noon

4th, 5th and 6th grades – 12 to 2 p.m.

For grades 7 through 12, the fieldhouse will be open for supervised open play from 2 to 6 p.m.

For college students, the fieldhouse will be open for basketball from 6- 7:30 p.m.

Children’s Indoor Instructional Tennis Program

The Recreation Department’s Winter Session of Children’s Tennis for ages 4-18 is quickly filling. These classes begin the week of Jan. 4 and run through April. Please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Avenue to register for any of our classes.

Adult Programs in the Fieldhouse

The Recreation Adult Programs in the Field House began Tuesday, Oct. 13, according to the following schedule:

Mondays:

Mens’ Open Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Mens’ Over 40 Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Tuesdays:

Mens’ Over 30 Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Wednesdays:

Mens’ Open Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Mens’ Over 40 Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Thursdays:

Adult Volleyball 7:30-10 p.m.

Adult Soccer 8:30-10 p.m.

These programs are open to residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City who have graduated from high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly “pickup.” Any resident wishing to participate must show their license each week in addition to signing in. A non-resident guest may play but must be accompanied by a resident to enter.

Holiday Movie

The Recreation Department will be showing The Muppets Christmas Carol at Cluett Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. The movie runs approximately 85 minutes. Admission is free. Popcorn and snacks will be available for a nominal charge. The recreation staff will supervise.

Interview Dates for Summer Employment at the Garden City Pool

The Garden City Pool is pleased to announce the dates for Pool Employment Interviews for the 2010 season. These interviews are open to people who are currently High School Seniors and older. All potential Pool Staff whether new or previously employed by the pool, must make an appointment for an interview. The interview date is Monday, Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Anyone who is interested in an interview, is encouraged to call the Recreation Office at 465-4075 to schedule their appointment. Applications, which must be brought to the interview, are available in the Recreation Office.

Saturday Men’s Basketball for Residents

Saturday Basketball is cancelled for Dec. 26. Have a happy holiday.
