Gadi Taub Guest Speaker at Great Neck Temple Emanuel
Gadi Taub will be the guest speaker at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck at 8 p.m. The Israeli writer will offer a talk entitled: “International Pressure & the Prospects for Peace.” Taub has a longstanding relationship with the Emanuel congregation, which looks forward each year to welcoming him back to its pulpit for an up-to-the-minute assessment of the situation in the Middle East. Herricks Middle School Opens The Sound of Music
At 7:30 p.m. at the Herricks Community Center, Herricks Middle School students will rise the curtain on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s well-loved musical, The Sound of Music. The production, directed by Deborah Walker, will have a three-show run with performances also on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. The cast will be accompanied by a student orchestra, lead by Alicia Perrone. Tickets are available at the door prior to the show and are $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Herricks senior citizens are admitted free (with reservations) with a Herricks Gold Pass, available at the Community Center Office with proof of age and residency. Valentine Tea at Hillside Public Library
Friends of the Hillside Public Library will hold its third annual Valentine’s Tea to be held in the all purpose room of the Hillside Public Library on Feb. 7 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The cost is $15 per person and includes tea, scones, sandwiches and dessert. Copies of the flier will be available at the Hillside Public Library-requests for tickets must be mailed with the tear off and check or dropped off with your check to the library to secure your reservation. Seating is limited. Raffles will be available – please bring your prettiest teacup. This is an adults’ only activity.
Parkville Library to Host Love Your Library
The Parkville Branch of the Great Neck Library, 10 Campbell Street, New Hyde Park, is hosting a “Love Your Library” open house from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be lots of chocolate, cookies and light refreshments to welcome all who attend and re-discover the world that is at the fingertips of all library participants. Open to all residents. Note: Civil leadership continues to pursue the possibility of expanding the Parkville Library Branch. The library director is meeting with the Great Neck School superintendent to explore this possibility.
Lion Dance Masks At LICM
On Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. to celebrate Chinese New Year and the year of the tiger come to the Long Island Children’s Museum. The Lion Dance is a cultural Chinese dance often performed during festivals and parades for Lunar New Year celebrations. Start off the Chinese Lunar New Year by making a mask, and then join a parade of other Lion Dancers as they wind around the museum. Age: 5 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission. ($2 LICM members). Cub Scout Pack No. 489 To Hold Annual Blue And Gold Dinner
The Annual Blue and Gold Award Dinner of Cub Scout Pack No. 489 will be held in the Holy Spirit Auditorium, 16 South 6th Street, New Hyde Park. The ceremony starts promptly at 1:30 p.m. The Cub Scouts will receive their advancement badges for their accomplishments during the year. In addition the Webelos II Scouts will be receiving the Arrow of Light Award and will be crossing over to the Boy Scouts. The names of the boys “crossing over” are: Devan Barbieri, Rben Bodon, Daniel Celic, Matthew D’Amico, Matthew Fitzgerald and Andrew Grivas. The Doe Club of New Hyde Park will hold its Annual Chinese Auction at the New Hyde Park Elks Club, 901 Lakeville Road, New Hyde Park. Doors to open at 6:30 p.m. and portion of the proceeds to benefit Cerebral Palsy. Donation is $25 and includes 30 auction tickets and dinner from soup to fortune cookies.
