Project Linus Event at Michael’s in Westbury

Nassau Co. Chapter of Project Linus will be sending 500 blankets to Christian Aid Ministries in Haiti. Volunteers are needed for boxing the blankets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Michael’s Arts and Crafts, 1280 Corporate Drive, Westbury. New Hyde Park GOP Candidates To Hold Pizza Night

The Greater New Hyde Park Republican Club would like you to join them over pizza and soda as your 2009 GOP candidates say thank you, and look forward with optimism to 2010. This will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Marcus Christ Hall, adjacent to New Hyde Park Village Hall on the corner of Jericho Turnpike and New Hyde Park Road. All are welcome.

The next regular meeting of the Water Authority of Western Nassau will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the offices of the water authority, 58 South Tyson Avenue, Floral Park. The public is welcome to attend.

Williston Park Civic Association To Hold Candidates Forum

The Williston Park Civic Association will hold a candidates forum at the American Legion Hall, on Willis Avenue, to start at 8 p.m. The purpose of the forum is an opportunity for all Williston Park residents to become familiarized with the candidates running for the office of mayor and trustee of the village on the various party lines. Prior to the forum the candidates will be sent questions they will be expected to answer. In addition, the general public will be able to submit to the moderator, on cards,their own questions. No questions from the public will be acknowledged without submitting a card to the moderator.

Financial Wellness Talk At Herricks Seniors

A presentation highlighting proper retirement planning and its role in financial wellness for senior citizens will take place at 11:45 a.m. at the Herricks Community Center, 999 Herricks Road, New Hyde Park. The featured speakers will be John P. Merendino and Joseph M. Liana partners in Merendino, Liana and Associates, Westbury, a leading financial planning firm representing Ameriprise. Their topics will include adapting retirement planning to today’s economy. They are both senior financial advisers and chartered retirement planning counselors. Chinese Association to Celebrate Year of Tiger

The Chinese American Association of North Hempstead (CAANH), will hold its Year of The Tiger celebration at the Herricks High School Gym. The purpose of the cultural event is to cultivate goodwill and introduce Chinese culture and traditions to our community. An exciting program is planned which will include Chinese Fan Dance, Chinese Circus, Face Changing, Kung Fu and Sing-Along etc. to welcome the year of the Tiger. Events include: Open tennis tournament from 3 to 5:30 p.m. (walk-in registration), open Chinese Chess tournament from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (walk-in registration) All of the other events will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Herricks High School, Shelter Rock Road, New Hyde Park.

Model Railroad Exhibit At Marcus Christ Hall

The Model Railroading Museum will be hosting its annual operating show on Feb. 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Marcus Christ Hall, 1420 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park (corner of Jericho Turnpike and New Hyde Park Road). The building is handicapped accessible. It will consist of operating railroads in HO and N scale, an interactive classic Lionel O scale, operating live steam locomotives in G scale and other exhibits. Admission is free. Winthrop-University Hospital Hosts Dance Your Health Out

Do you want to dance? As part of a national initiative by Spirit of Women to promote heart health, Winthrop-University Hospital is inviting the community to “Dance Your Health Out.” The free program will be held at Winthrop’s Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard at the corner of Second Street in Mineola from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event will feature group dancing, dancing demonstrations, Karaoke by Winthrop staff, health screenings, educational information, and activities for children. “Families with children and retirees will take time out of their busy schedules to have some fun while they are learning more about the prevention of heart disease,” said Deborah Johnson-Schiff, RN, BSN, CNN, Senior Vice President of Winthrop. “We plan on having activities run throughout the day, so people should feel free to stay for as little or as long as their time will allow.” Dance for Health is powered by Spirit of Women, a national network of hospitals and healthcare providers across the United States that ascribe to the highest standards of excellence in women’s health, education and community outreach. Antique and Collectibles Auction

An Antique and Collectibles Auction will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 16 South 9th Street, New Hyde Park (south of Jericho Turnpike). At 9 a.m. there will be a viewing and at 10 a.m. the auction will begin. Church of Holy Spirit to Offer Defensive Driving Course

The Church of the Holy Spirit, 500 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park will hold a defensive driving course sponsored by the National Safety Council from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $45. Participants will receive a 10 percent reduction in the liability and collision portion of their insurance premium and it will also remove four points from their driving record. St. Aidan Rosary Altar Society To Hold St. Patrick Celebration

St. Aidan Rosary Altar Society will hold its annual St. Patrick Supper Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight in Msgr. Kirwin Hall. Music will be by “Celtic Connection.” Tickets are $30 per person and include light supper of sandwiches, soda, beer, wine, set-ups and Irish soda bread. The group will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and St. Joseph’s Day with Irish Soda Bread and a Canoli Cake from Marzullo’s bakery.
