Island Trees Volleyball Fundraiser A Huge Success

The first Joe Masi Memorial Scholarship will be given this June at graduation thanks to the dedication of the Island Trees community. On April 28, staff from Island Trees Memorial Middle School played against staff from the Island Trees High School in a volleyball tournament. The night was a huge success and raised $3,874 in scholarship money!

This event was in honor of Joe Masi, a 2007 graduate of Island Trees High School, who was killed in a tragic accident in June of 2009. The scholarship in Joe’s name will be given out during the high school graduation ceremony in June and will ensure that Joe’s kind and giving nature will always live on.

Leading the fundraiser was Mrs. Gribbin, Mrs. Thielemann and Ms. Timmons from the high school, Ms. Krull and Mrs. Lashin from the middle school, along with the middle school and high school SADD clubs.

Before the games began, Mrs. Gribbin gave a speech in honor of Joe. This was followed by Joe’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Masi, who spoke of some fond memories of their son. The high school gym was packed with everyone waiting to cheer on their favorite team. The whistle blew and the games began. The high school started off with a bang and won the first two sets. Then the middle school came back from behind to win the next set. The high school won the next game winning the tournament and walking away with the trophy! A job well done by all.

In true Island Trees spirit, so many people came together to make this event happen. The community, teachers, parents, administrators, students and staff, all eagerly volunteered their time. Thank you to all who contributed. Your efforts in making this such a huge success are greatly appreciated. Will the trophy stay at the high school? We will have to wait until next year to see!
